Each brain reacts differently to trauma and the consequences of a traumatic brain injury are not always externally obvious—hence the “silent epidemic” branding — so family, friends and others do not always understand there is a problem. This can be isolating and frustrating. Informing friends and family about how they can best provide caregiver support can facilitate a survivor’s transition back to the community.
TBI Healing Tips
One of the best first steps someone can take in determining treatment for a TBI is a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. This provides insight on the actual impact the injury has on functioning. The evaluation is especially important because just knowing which part of the brain was impacted is not enough to know the exact effect it has on a person’s life.
When getting help, it is important to be surrounded with a multidisciplinary team that is knowledgeable with the specific type of brain injury and limitations the patient is experiencing. Counseling can help the patient working through the transition of having new limitations, dealing with family issues, and/or identifying compensatory strategies to help cope with things in new ways, such as implementing a visual cue that reminds the patient to practice deep breathing when frustration rises. Other effective therapies include neurofeedback brain-wave training which helps improve the physiology and cognitive functioning of the brain.
